Nestled in the lush greenery of Yakushima Island, Japan, resort Sankara Hotel & Spa offers an unparalleled experience of luxury and tranquility. From the moment you arrive on the island, you’re embraced by the mystique and serene beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Little did we expect to not only find ourselves in one of the oldest forests in the world but also to experience one of the best resort stays of our lives.
The Journey: An Adventure to Remember
The journey to Sankara is an adventure in itself—starting with a flight from Tokyo to Kagoshima, followed by two ferry rides, the first leading to Tanegashima and the second finally to Yakushima island. We were picked up from the port, and after a half hour’s drive, we found ourselves stepping into the resort, which felt like entering a different world.
First Impressions: Unmatched Japanese Hospitality
From the first moment, the staff is by your side, ready to assist with anything, ensuring every aspect of your stay is perfect. Their dedication to hospitality is unmatched, and their attention to detail is truly remarkable.
Accommodations: Embraced by Nature
The rooms at Sankara resort are spacious, containing a main sleeping area, a living room, and a day bed area. Crafted with a preference for natural materials like wood and stone, they make you feel embraced by nature even when you’re indoors. The rooms have their own private indoor hot tub, which is a lovely addition to the huge shower and vanity area. Outside the window, you can enjoy views of either a lush forest or the ocean.
Culinary Excellence: Unprecedented Offering
But now let’s talk about the biggest highlight of our stay at Sankara: the food. Japan is known for its amazing cuisine, and yet, after a month and a half spent in the country, resort Sankara Hotel & Spa managed to blow us away. Made with local ingredients, including fish caught in nearby waters, and with a focus on fresh seafood and seasonal produce, the two restaurants at the resort set a very high standard.
Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the Japanese attention to detail was evident in every dish. Breakfast and dinner were included in our stay, but it was far beyond what you’d expect from all-inclusive meals. We highly recommend opting for the traditional Japanese breakfast—Wachoushoku—as it is an absolute feast for the eyes and the stomach. Prepare to receive a table full of miniature plates, each containing a different dish. This tasting menu will impress you every morning and leave you dreaming of breakfast as soon as you finish your dinner, which was just as impressive.

Spa and Wellness: Relaxation and Rejuvenation
The spa at Sankara includes massages and body treatments, plus a sauna with stunning views, located right next to the pool. The gym is relatively small but has everything one might need for a rounded workout. Two electric bikes are available to rent for a symbolic price, perfect for those willing to explore the surroundings (highly recommended!).
Service: Beyond Expectations
What truly sets Sankara apart, however, is the exceptional level of service. The staff are warm, attentive, and go above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. Whether arranging guided tours of the island, suggesting the best hiking trails, or simply ensuring that every detail of your stay is perfect, their dedication to hospitality is evident in everything they do.
Conclusion: A Perfect Blend of Luxury and Nature
Overall, resort Sankara Hotel & Spa Yakushima, Japan, is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience. A perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and natural beauty, it’s an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful escape in one of Japan’s most stunning locations. We cannot recommend it highly enough—it truly is a haven of tranquility and elegance.
